THE TOOLKIT

HIA is a multi-faceted approach to enhancing neighborhood agency and capacity to shape community outcomes. First launched in East Harlem by the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, HIA uses the power of participatory grant-making to identify community-led priorities for equity.

WHAT IS IN THE DOWNLOAD?

By downloading the toolkit, you’ll be receiving a robust, tactical guide in addition to templates and tools to harness the power of participatory grant-making. Across the different toolkit sections, you will be presented with strategic tips, considerations, and best practices for how to best shape the HIA model to your community’s needs.

The toolkit supports the replication of the HIA program from discovery and launch to evaluation, including:

  • An overview of HIA and how to successfully plan and lead this approach

  • The story of HIA in East Harlem and the lessons learned

  • A tactical guide towards the work streams that support operationalizing HIA: participatory grant-making and capacity-building

  • Tools and resources that help you to adapt the program seamlessly and inclusively

Tools and resources that are most helpful for running the program have also been translated into Spanish to maximize the reach for those planning and leading a participatory grant-making initiative, as well as those who are benefiting from this approach.
