HEALTH IN ACTION

TOOLKIT

What is Health in Action?

Health in Action (HIA) is a multi-faceted approach to enhancing neighborhood agency and capacity to shape community health outcomes that can be applied across all sectors. First launched in East Harlem by the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health (a part of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Health), Health in Action uses the power of participatory grant-making to identify community-led priorities and supports community-based change.

HIA SUPPORTS PARTICIPATORY GRANT-MAKING AND CAPACITY-BUILDING IN COMMUNITIES BY:

  • Prioritizing local community expertise and knowledge to support a community-based

decision-making process,

  • Supporting community-based organizations working towards community outcomes, and

  • Reaching community-level organizations that have historically faced barriers accessing grant funding.

The major activities for HIA support a comprehensive and equitable process for participatory decision-making that further promotes transparency, accountability, and trust across community stakeholders.
